Your spine is designed to support movement, balance, and protection for your nervous system. But in modern life, everyday habits, many of them seemingly harmless, are slowly hurting your spine’s health.
At Indian Trail Chiropractic & Rehab, we see how small daily behaviors lead to big problems like neck pain, low back issues, poor posture, and even headaches. The good news? With a few key adjustments to your routine, you can prevent and even reverse much of this strain.
1. Sitting for Long Periods
Prolonged sitting, especially with poor posture, compresses your spine and weakens your core. Unfortunately, more and more jobs and lifestyles leave us sitting for longer-than-healthy periods of time.
Fix it:
- Take breaks every 30–45 minutes to stand and move.
- Use a chair that supports your lumbar curve.
- Set your desk up according to ergonomic guidelines.
2. Tech Neck from Devices
Looking down at your phone or laptop pulls your head forward, increasing pressure on the cervical spine. Let’s face it – we are basically living on our mobile devices which is killing our posture.
Fix it:
- Hold devices at eye level.
- Do daily chin tucks and upper back stretches.
- Learn more about Upper Cross Syndrome and how we treat it at ITC.
3. Bad Sleep Positioning
Too many pillows or sleeping on your stomach strains the neck and lower back.
Fix it:
- Sleep on your back or side with proper pillow support.
- Replace your mattress if it’s more than 8 years old.
- Read more in our Posture Blog.
4. Wearing Unsupportive Footwear
Shoes that collapse at the arch or lack cushioning contribute to poor alignment and joint pain.
Fix it:
- Choose footwear with mid-foot support and lateral stability.
- Visit us for a gait assessment and ask about custom orthotics.
5. Lifting and Reaching Incorrectly
Twisting, lifting heavy objects without bending your knees, or constantly reaching into the back seat of your car can create acute back injuries.
Fix it:
- Always bend at the knees and lift with your legs.
- Minimize repetitive reaching. Reorganize your car or workspace if needed.
